Every day, well over two thousand radiosondes are launched all over the world. Nowadays, these are single use devices meaning they will be left in nature if they’re not recovered. Even when they are found, they will be thrown away.
That’s where my idea comes: What if you could reuse a radiosonde?
In the early days of radiosondes, they were actually meant to be sent back and reused multiple time. As technology progressed, however, the highly accurate, well calibrated sensors couldn’t guarantee a good quality of data after the sonde had been used once anymore.
This meant I had to create a reusable radiosonde with a replacable sensor system. I developed a radiosondes that weighs less than one fith of the most commonly used radiosonde type. This cuts down on the environmental impact of sondes that are not recovered and also reduces the size of the balloon needed which means less lifting Gas is needed and thus the price of a single sounding drops significantly.
The sensor of my design is also replacable while still using top of the line sensors from reputable companies.
